Joinery: the element that changed a family's life

The brief was direct. A family of five, three boys, one shared living space. Organising was a daily battle. The room had to absorb an enormous amount of daily life — technology, memories, games, books, the fireplace they'd always wanted — without collapsing under its own chaos.

This project was designed through Casa Consult, our real-time design consultation service. No full project scope. No extended engagement. A few focused sessions until we found the perfect balance between maximazing storage and keeping aesthetics elegant, that produced a resolved outcome — one that the clients could take to their builder with full confidence.

This before shot shows the living room before the new curtains, furniture, rug, and the entretainment unit, which became the focus point of the social area. All changes were done during Casa Consult sessions. Little by little the clients achieved their outcome of their dream home.

Starting with function, ending with form

The first question was never "what should it look like." It was: "how can we leverage this wall to solve our everyday mess problem"

Adults needed considered display space: art books, ceramics, framed photographs. Children needed frictionless access to their own things, without adult intervention required to keep order.

The answer was a deliberate split. Tall storage flanking both sides, fitted internally with shelves for adult items that live behind closed doors. Wide, low drawers across the base — proportioned specifically so children can open them independently, store their own belongings, and close them again.

The visual logic of two tones

A unit that spans almost an entire wall carries visual weight. The brief included one word: modern beachy. Coastal without being literal. Relaxed but still chic.

The two tones breaks the visual weight. We used white lacquered panels for the base cabinetry, Tasmanian Oak for the open joinery. We also added a wallpaper on the back panels to bring in texture, making the background interesting and warm.

A jute-look vinyl — Zostera by Casamance — lines the back of every open shelf. It grounds the shelving as display space rather than storage, which changes how objects feel when placed against it.

What this project proves

If your home is not working for you and your family, the answer could be easier and more affordable than you think. You don't need to move to a bigger house, you need better systems that improve how you use the space, with a look that will increase the value of the property and the appreciation for your home.

The chaos that required adult management every day became a system that children navigate themselves. The television became part of a considered composition. The fireplace grounds the conversational layout. The room, which had all the right proportions but none of the resolve, finally made sense.

That's the return on a well-made design decision. Not aesthetics for their own sake, but space that actively supports the life being lived inside it.
